Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the immediate past President of the State Customary Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Patience Onuwa Elumeze.

Justice Elumeze reportedly died on Tuesday in Abuja after a brief illness, two years after her retirement from the bench.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the late jurist as a committed and accomplished legal luminary who made outstanding contributions to the development of the judicial system in Delta State.

The Governor said: “We have lost a woman of integrity, compassion, and a true reformer in the judiciary.

“Justice Elumeze served the state with honour and dedication, particularly during her time as President of the Customary Court of Appeal. Her leadership ushered in critical reforms that enhanced the speed and efficiency in the dispensation of justice.”

Justice Elumeze was first appointed as Acting President of the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal in November 2020 by former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, following the retirement of her predecessor, Justice Stella Ogene. She was officially sworn in as the substantive President in June 2021 and retired from service in April 2023.

Governor Oborevwori extended his condolences to the Elumeze family, the judiciary, and the people of Delta State, praying for the repose of her soul and strength for those she left behind.
