The race for the next Ovie (king) of Udu Kingdom has officially begun, with Chief Onos Gasper Ighwre announcing his intention to contest for the prestigious title. This declaration follows the passing of the late Ovie of Udu Kingdom, HRM Bethel Delekpe, Owhoru 1.
In a heartfelt statement outlining his vision, Chief Gasper Ighwre expressed his deep love for the Udu people and his commitment to transformative leadership.
He stated, “My intention to contest for the kingship of our dear Udu Kingdom is born out of the love for my people and the desire to transform Udu Kingdom and attract international presence to our place.”
Reflecting on the challenges faced by his community, Chief Ighwre lamented, “For over 20 years, I lived abroad, and it pains me that all this while, Udu has not seen real development. Our people are still struggling financially, and the government has forgotten us for too long.”
He emphasized his ambitions to be a voice of liberation for the Udu people, stating, “I want to attract government attention and development to our land.”
Chief Ighwre highlighted his philanthropic efforts through his Rainbow Foundation, which has supported numerous charitable and community projects over the years. He indicated that if given the opportunity to serve as Ovie, he would continue to expand these initiatives and leverage his international connections to attract investors and create jobs in Udu.
“I am not seeking the throne for power, but to serve with love, honesty, and a heart to unite the people,” he added.
He however expressed gratitude to the Udu Council of Chiefs for their sincerity and transparency in adhering to the 1979 Edicts and Declaration regarding the election of a new Udu king, saying that “Your firm and outright decision of not adopting the endorsement of a sole candidate clearly reflects your non-partisan stance and commitment to due process. This courageous and principled action is deeply appreciated and speaks volumes of your integrity”.
