Team Delta Shines at National Sports Festival Opening Ceremony in Ogun

Team Delta made a grand and vibrant appearance on Sunday evening as they joined thirty-five other states of the Federation and the FCT Abuja at the opening ceremony of the 22nd National Sports Festival, held at the iconic MKO Abiola International Stadium in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The colourful event, which featured a spectacular blend of cultural displays and sporting energy, officially kicked off the Gateway Games 2024. The ceremony was declared open by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima. Dignitaries in attendance included host Governor Dapo Abiodun, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka, former Speaker Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole, and several others.

Representing the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, was the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme. Team Delta was proudly led during the ceremonial march-past by the Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori.

Clad in their official sporting kits and waving the state flag with pride, Team Delta’s athletes, coaches, and officials marched with high spirit and unity, symbolizing their readiness to defend their title as champions of the last edition held in Asaba in 2022.

The evening also featured electrifying performances by music stars Davido and Asa, who kept the audience entertained and energized.

President Tinubu, in his remarks, described the National Sports Festival as Nigeria’s biggest sporting platform, designed to foster national unity, promote excellence, and discover new talents. Over 10,000 athletes and officials are participating in the two-week multi-sports fiesta, which features 33 sporting disciplines.

Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, and the Director General and Chairman of the Main Organizing Committee, Bukola Olopade, assured of a smooth and impactful festival while commending Ogun State for its readiness and hospitality.

The Gateway Games 2024 began on May 16 and will run through May 30, 2025, showcasing Nigeria’s sporting prowess and the enduring spirit of national unity.
