Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, has stated that the 40% mobilization fee for newly awarded contracts in the state has made it unattractive for contractors to sell their projects.
Speaking on Politics HQ on News Central Television, monitored in Asaba, Aniagwu emphasized that Delta State maintains a high standard of living and has continued executing projects without resorting to borrowing since Governor Sheriff Oborevwori assumed office.
“We have made it clear that we are solvent and financing our projects without borrowing. Delta is the only state where every contract awarded receives 40% mobilization upfront,” he said.
Aniagwu explained that this approach ensures contractors have the necessary funds to execute projects without delays caused by financial constraints. He noted that the policy also prevents frequent contract cost reviews due to currency fluctuations and inflation.
“By providing immediate funding, we eliminate excuses related to loan access or bank delays. This is why it is now difficult for anyone to sell their contract, as the government ensures the funds are readily available for execution,” he added.
He further highlighted that the policy has significantly improved project completion timelines, with contractors delivering within three months instead of prolonged delays that previously stretched projects to three years.
Addressing criticisms comparing Delta’s infrastructural projects with those in other states, Aniagwu dismissed them as baseless, noting that Delta’s projects involve larger, more complex structures. He cited examples of multi-span flyovers and wide dual carriageways, stating that such comparisons lacked factual accuracy.
On speculation about Governor Oborevwori leaving the PDP, Aniagwu debunked the rumors, affirming the governor’s commitment to governance and the party.
“The governor is fully focused on fulfilling his promises to the people and delivering tangible results. He remains a dedicated PDP member, and his performance speaks for itself,” Aniagwu concluded.
